Lesson Overview


This cross-curricular lesson plan was designed to include standards and objectives in line with Social Studies, Career Education and Life Skills.

Students will embark on a journey around the world, where students will share with them interests, hobbies and carreer aspirations.

This lessons overall objective is to foster the following skills

  • Future Planning Skills: Students will envision their future selves by identifying their current interests and how these could translate into future careers.
  • Goal Setting: Learn to set practical steps towards achieving their dreams, considering how their actions can positively affect their community and the wider world.
  • Self-awareness and Reflection: Encourage students to reflect on their passions and how these could shape their future roles in society.

  • Alignment: Helps students explore different careers and understand the skills needed for various professions as outlined in Career Awareness standards.

Canada

  • Curriculum Area: Guidance and Career Education
  • Alignment: Aligns with Canadian curriculum objectives of self-awareness and career exploration.

New Zealand

  • Curriculum Area: Health and Career Education
  • Alignment: Encourages students to consider future pathways and how their skills and interests can lead to fulfilling careers.

  • Alignment: Meets objectives for students to develop knowledge and skills to manage their educational and career pathways.

Introductory Activities

Let's warm up with a game of hobbies and interests! 

Ask students to write down their interests in an open-ended way.


Then... ask them to rank these in order of importance...

Discussion Prompts:

  1. Dream Big:
    • "Discuss what you dream of becoming in the future. How can you start working towards it from now?"
  2. Impact on the World:
    • "How do you think your chosen career can help make the world a better place?"

Storytelling:

  • My Future Self Story:
    • "Write a short story about a day in your life ten years from now. What are you doing? How are you making a difference? What does your daily life look like?"

Blended Activities/Projects Ideas:

  1. Career Day Presentation:
    • Organize a career day where you can present a career you are interested in. Include what the job entails, why it interests you, and what you can do now to reach that goal.
  2. Interview a Professional:
    • Interview someone who works in the field you're interested in. Ask about their day-to-day tasks and what advice they have for someone starting out.
  3. Community Improvement Project:
    • Think of a project that could improve your local community that relates to your future career. Plan out the steps you would take to make it happen.
